Chapter 12

Ally made sure that Arnold and Peaches had everything they needed. She laughed as Arnold gobbled up his food, his appetite was definitely back. Ally stepped back into the shop and joined her grandmother and Gabby in the kitchen to find them in the middle of making another batch of candies. She updated them as she began melting some chocolate herself.

“I think Luke’s going to dig into Theo more, he thinks the keycard could have been dropped at any time, though.”

“That’s a good point.” Charlotte nodded. “We have no idea when it was actually lost.”

“My mind keeps going back to Douglas. He had the most to gain from Ivy being killed. I can’t stop thinking about those scratches on his wrist.” Ally shook her head as she slowly stirred the melting chocolate. “I really think we need to find out more about how he got them.”

“He wasn’t exactly interested in talking to us anymore.” Charlotte guided Gabby through spreading the melted chocolate thinly across a large, flat mold. “If you make it too thick, the pieces won’t cut, they will just shatter, and yes the candies will still be tasty, but they won’t be presentable.”

“Okay.” Gabby nodded and repeated the motion that Charlotte showed her.

“If he did get those scratches from Ivy, the DNA will show it. Now that I’ve said something about them to him, if he’s the killer, he might panic and take off. We can’t wait for the results. I think we should go to his house and see if we can find out what he’s up to.” Ally poured the melted chocolate into waiting molds.

“You’re going to go to his house?” Gabby looked up from the chocolate in front of her. “Aren’t you scared that he might catch you? If he’s really the killer, he might attack you.”

“We won’t be spotted. I just want to find out more about him. For someone who has lived in this town for so long, I actually don’t know him very well. Do you, Mee-Maw?” Ally glanced over at her grandmother.

“Not really. He has always kept to himself on a personal level. But he’s always been very friendly at the shop. He’s also quite giving. I’ve seen him drop off bags of groceries to families who have hit hard times without ever asking for an ounce of recognition for it.” Charlotte shrugged. “He may be a bit of a puzzle, but he seems to have a good heart. That was why I was so surprised he didn’t agree to pay Ivy’s medical bills. But maybe he really couldn’t afford them.”

“Mee-Maw, I just think if we can get a look at his homelife, we might be able to figure out more about him.” Ally picked up the mold and slid it onto one of the nearby shelves. “Maybe he had a connection with Ivy beyond the lawsuit. Luke mentioned she likely had her own secrets. We have no idea how they might have been connected to each other.”

“You may be right about that.
